Your garden will love you for recycling this spring! |
Recycling organic waste is vital to the future of our planet. Plus it’s the fun, inexpensive way to produce rich worm tea or nutritious compost to get your garden blooming this Spring. Tumbleweed is one great Australian company that’s doing its bit to encourage every household, business and school to get involved. “Approximately 50% of household waste and 30% of all the waste we throw away is organic and currently, much of it goes into landfill, which is bad for the environment and incredibly wasteful – especially when you consider the great benefits it could have if it was properly recycled,” said Nigel Nattrass, Managing Director of Tumbleweed. To lead the way in organic recycling, Tumbleweed manufactures a range of compost bins and worm farms, from recycled plastics, to suit every household and every gardener. Nigel says that when it comes to designing products for the Tumbleweed range, his primary objective is to make recycling organic waste easy for people of all ages and from all walks of life. “We’ve developed worm farms in all shapes and sizes. Our Can-O-Worms has been designed to make organic recycling loads of fun for kids, while our classy Worm Café is designed for apartments and terraces. Our original product, the Worm Factory is well loved by serious gardeners. Its sturdy, functional and well priced.” Tumbleweed’s composting bins have long been a favourite with Australian gardeners. While the 400L bin is perfect for composting organic kitchen waste, grass clippings and cuttings from large gardens, the 220L compost bin and 220L Compost Tumbler, are ideal for smaller suburban backyards. Tumbleweed’s 220L Compost Tumbler, with its central bar, breaks up clumps and aerates the organic waste to speed the recycling process. “Organic waste can become heavy and airless if it sits idle. That’s when you get fruit flies and bad smells. With a turn or two of the drum every alternate day, the 220L Compost Tumbler breaks up the matter and gets the air flowing through,” said Nigel. With Compost bins, it wasn’t quite so easy until Tumbleweed introduced the Aerator. This ergonomically designed new product has an easy grip handle, and a strong rod with a spiral end. Aerating is as simple as twisting the rod into the organic waste but the benefits are enormous – organic waste breaks down up to five times faster than matter left idle. The aerator can also be used to bring ripe compost to the top of the bin ready for use. Another Tumbleweed innovation is the company’s newly release Compost and Worm Farm Conditioner, which helps neutralise acidity and balances the pH levels in your worm farm or compost bin. “Keeping the condition of your worm farm or compost bin at optimum level means your worms can digest larger quantities of food waste faster so you quickly get rich worm tea and well balanced compost,” said Nigel. The conditioner is made from natural minerals so it’s perfectly safe to use on organic waste that will later be thrown onto your vegetable patch in the form of compost or worm tea. Tumbleweed’s commitment to the environment is evident in every product the company manufactures. Every worm farm and compost bin is made from recycled plastics and can be recycled and re used once again at the end of their life. At Tumbleweed we’re proud of our achievements. We export our products around the world, in fact we export into every continent. RELN, Tumbleweed's parent company has been manufacturing these products since the early 1990's.
